The Anthurium Allure: Popular Types and Easy Care Guide

For plant lovers, the Anthurium is an absolute icon. Known as the "Flamingo Flower" or "Laceleaf," this plant offers an exotic look and incredible durability that few other houseplants can match.

Are you looking to brighten up a dull corner? Or perhaps you want to add a tropical vibe to your living room? Here is a simple guide to the best Anthurium varieties and how to keep them thriving indoors.

Why Choose an Anthurium?

Anthuriums are famous for two things: their Flowers (technically called spathes) which are brightly colored and long-lasting, and their Foliage, which is often thick, textured, and dramatic. They are excellent indoor plants because they adapt well to indoor lighting and instantly make a room feel more luxurious.

3 Most Popular Anthurium Types

While there are hundreds of species, these three are the favorites among both beginners and collectors:

1. Anthurium Andraeanum (The Flamingo Flower)

This is the classic variety you see in most flower shops.

  • The Look: It features a heart-shaped, waxy "flower" (spathe) in bright red, pink, or white. It looks so glossy it almost resembles plastic.
  • Why You’ll Love It: The blooms are incredibly long-lasting and can stay fresh on the plant for months.

2. Anthurium Crystallinum (Crystal Anthurium)

A favorite for foliage lovers, often called "Elephant Ear" in some regions.

  • The Look: Large, heart-shaped leaves with a dark green, velvety texture. The most striking feature is the shimmering silvery-white veins that pop against the dark leaf.
  • Why You’ll Love It: It brings a stunning, deep rainforest vibe to your home.

3. Anthurium Jenmanii

Once considered the "King" of Anthuriums with a very high price tag, it remains a favorite for its structural beauty.

  • The Look: The leaves are thick, stiff, and leathery. They grow in a rosette shape (like a bird's nest), looking very sturdy and upright.
  • Why You’ll Love It: It is incredibly tough and adds a bold, architectural statement to a room.

Simple Tips for Anthurium Care

To keep your Anthurium blooming and growing new leaves, just follow these three golden rules:

  1. Lighting (Bright Indirect Light): Anthuriums love light, but they hate the sun. Avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch their leaves. Place them near a window with sheer curtains where they can get plenty of natural but filtered light.
  2. Soil Mix (Airy is Best): Anthurium roots need to breathe. Do not use dense garden soil. Instead, use a chunky, porous mix (like a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil). If the soil is too heavy, the roots will rot.
  3. Watering: Water only when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Anthuriums are more tolerant of being dry than being soaking wet. Overwatering is the number one killer of this plant!
