Anthurium Fort Sherman

Description

Botanical name: Anthurium 'Fort Sherman'

Common names: Anthurium Fort Sherman, Dark Velvet Anthurium

The Anthurium Fort Sherman is a highly sought-after rare aroid, recognized for its dramatic, deeply lobed, and elongated shield-shaped leaves. As the plant matures, its velvety foliage deepens into a rich, dark green—sometimes appearing almost black under certain lighting—creating a striking contrast with its subtle, light green veining. It is a bold, structural plant that naturally commands attention in any rare plant collection.

Cultivated in the optimal tropical climate of Bogor, Indonesia, our Anthurium Fort Sherman specimens are carefully grown and acclimated in our own private greenhouse. By managing the cultivation process directly, we can closely monitor each plant's health, ensuring they develop strong, robust root systems and resilient foliage before they make their journey across the globe to your indoor jungle.

Anthurium Fort Sherman Care Guide

While it looks exotic, the Fort Sherman responds well to consistent care. Follow these practical tips to help your plant thrive:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun will easily scorch the dark velvet leaves and bleach their deep coloration. A spot near an east-facing window or under a grow light is ideal.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1 to 2 inches of the potting mix feels dry to the touch. Anthuriums prefer their roots to be slightly moist but will quickly rot if left sitting in heavy, waterlogged soil.
  • Soil: Use a highly porous, chunky aroid mix. We recommend a blend of orchid bark, perlite, pumice, and a bit of charcoal to provide excellent drainage and allow the thick roots to breathe.
  • Humidity: Like most velvet Anthuriums, it thrives in higher humidity (60% – 80%). If your home is dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant in a greenhouse cabinet to prevent crispy leaf edges.
  • Temperature: Keep it in a warm environment between 18°C to 27°C (65°F to 80°F). Avoid placing it near cold drafts, heaters, or direct air conditioning vents.
  • Air Circulation: Good airflow is just as important as humidity. Gentle air movement helps dry the leaves after watering and prevents fungal issues.
